Building according to web standards: XHTML for websites
XHTML is recommended if you plan to make intensive use of DOM (Document Object Model). If XHTML is chosen, naturally the web developer must be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using this. The XHTML specification must likewise be observed, as must the recommendations for the three existing versions.
The use of XML for government text documents is discouraged in Article 6-b of the Regulation on the ordered and accessible state of archive files.
The use of XHTML 1.1 is not being recommended just now, owing to the extremely strict characteristics of this standard and poor web browser support. XHTML 1.1 has to use the MIME type application/xhtml+xml, as in form 3. This means that the most commonly used web browser Microsoft Internet Explorer no longer recognises these documents as web pages.
