Evaluation of sustainably accessible websites

For the principal, the aim of checking a website is to form an objective judgement of the extent to which the result of an assignment complies with the requirements set in advance.

In some cases the principal will check a website himself. Smaller organisations will often commission an external (specialised) party to do the check. In both cases, it is important for the principal to have insight into the checking process in order to interpret the results.

Aspects of the checking process

This chapter discusses a number of important aspects in the process of checking the accessibility of a website.

  • how the check guidelines relate to the framework of requirements
  • how the result of the check can be expressed in a valuation
  • how the result of the check can be recorded
  • and finally, a brief overview of the type of tools that can be used for checking and testing websites

The Manual refers to checks and tests. Although both terms are closely related, there are differences. By ‘testing’ we mean the process of inspecting whether the test object complies with the requirements and expectations. This process is often executed by the builder of the test object, in this case the contractor.

‘Checking’ is the process of verifyin whether the delivered end product meets the preset requirements. This process will be carried out by, or at the responsibility of, the principal. The main object of this process is acceptance or rejection of the product, the website.

Lastly, the steps in the checking process are listed and discussed.
